How to Read the Food Effect Tooltip on Any Food Item

Hover to Reveal

Hover your cursor over any food item in your inventory, hotbar, chest, or crafting grid. The mod appends extra lines to the vanilla tooltip. You do not need to hold a key or open a special screen — the info appears automatically alongside the normal item name and lore.

What Each Line Means

Read the tooltip from top to bottom:

  • Hunger restoration — how many hunger points (the drumstick icons) the food refills.
  • Saturation — the hidden saturation value that determines how long you stay full. Higher saturation means hunger drains slower.
  • Effect lines — one line per potion effect the food grants. Each line shows the effect name, its amplifier (Roman numeral, e.g. II for level 2), and its duration in seconds or minutes.
  • Probability — for chance-based foods like rotten flesh, the line shows a percentage chance instead of a guaranteed effect. A guaranteed effect has no percentage.

Practical Tips

Compare two foods side by side by hovering each in turn. A food with lower hunger but higher saturation can keep you fed longer than one with a bigger hunger bar. When a tooltip lists multiple effects, check the durations — a short strong effect may matter more than a long weak one. If a line confuses you, the effect name matches the vanilla potion effect name, so you can look it up in your effects HUD after eating.
