Checking Chance-Based Effects Before Eating Risky Food
Identify the Risk
Some foods apply effects only some of the time. Rotten flesh is the classic example: it can give you Hunger. Hover the item and look for a percentage next to an effect line. That number is the probability the effect triggers each time you eat one item. A guaranteed effect has no percentage shown.
Plan Around the Odds
Because the roll happens per item eaten, eating several risky items stacks the chance of at least one bad effect landing. If you only need a little food, eat one item and check your effects HUD. If you are starving and have nothing else, eat the risky food anyway — the mod just tells you what you are gambling on, it does not stop you.
Mitigate the Downside
- Carry a bucket of milk to clear any negative effect you catch.
- Eat risky food while already full-ish so the hunger drain from a bad effect matters less.
- Prefer foods whose tooltip shows only positive effects when you have a choice.
- In a group, let a player with spare food eat the safe option while you test the risky one.
The tooltip is informational only — it never changes what the food actually does. Use it to decide, not to prevent.
