How to Set Up AFK-Style Fishing with the Bell in Your Offhand

Getting the Setup Right

Fish On The Line changes fishing so you no longer have to stare at the bobber. The core trick is holding a bell in your offhand while your fishing rod stays in your main hand. If the bell is not in your offhand, the mod's bite sound will not trigger (this is controlled by the mustHoldBellInOffhand config, which defaults to enabled).

1. Craft a bell (the vanilla bell recipe works).

2. Put the bell in your offhand slot. On Java Edition, press F by default to swap it there, or drag it into the offhand slot in your inventory.

3. Hold your fishing rod in your main hand.

4. Cast the line into water as normal.

Fishing Without Watching the Bobber

Once the bell is in your offhand, you can look away, sort inventory, or watch a nearby farm. When a fish bites, the bell rings audibly. That is your cue to right-click once with the rod to reel in the catch. You do not need to watch bubbles or the hook sinking. If you hear nothing when a bite should happen, double-check that the bell is actually in the offhand and not just somewhere in your inventory, and confirm the offhand config option has not been disabled.
