How do I start using the Fish On The Line Mod?
Craft a bell and place it in your offhand slot, then hold a fishing rod in your main hand. Cast the line as normal and the bell will ring whenever a fish bites, so you just right-click to reel in.
Does the bell have to be in my offhand or can I put it anywhere?
The bell must be in your offhand slot for the mod to work by default. If you want it to function without a bell, you need to change the mustHoldBellInOffhand config option.
Why isn't my bell ringing when a fish bites?
Make sure the bell is actually in your offhand and not your main hand or inventory, and that mustHoldBellInOffhand is set to true in the config. Also confirm you're holding a fishing rod in your main hand and the line is cast.
Can I fish without a bell at all?
Yes, if you set mustHoldBellInOffhand to false in the config, the bite sound will play without needing a bell in your offhand. This lets you use your offhand for other items like torches or shields while fishing.
What does the mustHoldBellInOffhand config option actually do?
When enabled (the default), the fish-on-the-line sound only triggers if you're holding a bell in your offhand. Disabling it removes the bell requirement so the sound plays regardless of what's in your offhand.
Can I use a shield or torch in my offhand while fishing with this mod?
Only if you disable mustHoldBellInOffhand in the config, since the default behavior requires the bell in your offhand. With the option off, you can hold other offhand items and still hear the bite sound.
Does the bell ring for other players nearby or only me?
The bell sound is tied to your own fishing action, so it plays for you when your hook is bitten. Other players won't hear your bell ring unless they're close enough to hear the actual bell block sound in the world.
Can I fish AFK with this mod?
The mod removes the need to watch for bubbles, but you still have to right-click to reel in the fish. It makes fishing much less attention-heavy, but it isn't fully automatic unless combined with other automation methods.
Does this mod work on servers and with other fishing mods?
It works on servers as long as the mod is installed on your client, since it only changes the sound and notification behavior. It generally plays fine with other fishing mods, but overlapping features like auto-reel may conflict.
Will the bell trick work in the rain or at night?
Yes, the bell ring is triggered by the fish bite itself, not by visual cues like bubbles or lighting. Rain, night, or poor visibility won't stop the bell from ringing when a fish bites.
