How do I start using the Firework Crossbow?

What's the difference between regular rockets and ones for the Crossbow?
Firework Rockets fired from a Crossbow now deal damage scaling with the number of Firework Stars they contain, and they have new visual and mechanical effects. Regular rockets in dispensers or thrown by hand work as before.
How do I maximize damage with the Firework Crossbow?
