Field Guide Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I start using the Field Guide Mod?
Equip a spyglass and look at any plant, animal, or monster through it to scan and unlock your first Field Guide entry. Open your Field Guide (check your inventory or use the configured keybind) to see what you've discovered so far.
What's the difference between scanning and just looking at something?
You must be holding and actively using a spyglass (right-click to aim) to scan entities and plants. Simply walking past or looking at them without the spyglass won't register a discovery.
Can I scan modded creatures and plants?
Yes, the mod works with modded entities and plants automatically without requiring extra configuration. Any entity or plant in your world can be scanned as long as it's recognized by the game.
Do my discoveries save if I leave the server or world?
Progress is saved per server or world, so your Field Guide entries persist when you log back in. If you join a different server or create a new world, you'll start with a fresh guide.
How do I add custom notes or lore to an entry?
Open an unlocked Field Guide entry and look for an edit or notes option to add your own text, item descriptions, or lore. This is useful for documenting findings with friends or adding personal reminders about where to find things.
Can I get rewards like XP or items when I discover something?
Yes, the mod supports XP rewards and custom commands triggered by discoveries, which can be configured through datapacks. Check your server or world's datapack settings to see if rewards are enabled.
What do I do if an entry is marked as hidden or I can't find it?
Hidden entries require specific discovery methods (like scanning under certain conditions or finding rare variants) to unlock. Refer to the lore clues in your Field Guide or check if there are hints about where or how to find the entry.
Can multiple players contribute to the same Field Guide on a server?
Yes, all players on the same server share progress toward the Field Guide, so discoveries made by any player count toward the collective guide. This makes exploration more rewarding when playing with friends.
Does scanning take time, or is it instant?
Scanning happens when you aim the spyglass at a valid target; the exact timing depends on your server or world configuration. Most setups make it relatively quick to encourage active exploration.
Can I customize which plants, animals, or monsters are scannable?
Yes, you can control discovery methods, categories, and which entries appear through datapack configuration. This lets server admins or world creators tailor the mod to their specific needs or theme.
