Optimize Hoppers for a Large Modpack or Server

Balance Performance and Functionality

On servers or in heavy modpacks, hopper speed affects both gameplay experience and server load. Finding the right settings prevents lag while keeping automation smooth.

Recommended Approach

Start by testing the default settings. If your server struggles:

  • Increase hopperTickSpeed slightly (try 10-12) to reduce hopper update frequency
  • Keep hopperItemsPerTransfer moderate (4-8) to avoid bottlenecks

If automation feels too slow:

  • Decrease hopperTickSpeed gradually (try 6-4)
  • Increase hopperItemsPerTransfer to move more per cycle

Commands to Use

`

/gamerule hopperTickSpeed [value]

/gamerule hopperItemsPerTransfer [value]

`

Monitor and Adjust

Watch your server's TPS (ticks per second) and player feedback. Faster hoppers = more server processing. Slower hoppers = less lag but potentially frustrating automation delays. Most servers find a sweet spot between 6-10 ticks with 2-4 items per transfer.
