How to Choose Between Wood Types for Barrels, Sieves, and Crucibles

Functional differences

Most wood types (Acacia, Birch, Cherry, Bamboo, etc.) produce Barrels, Sieves, and Crucibles with identical core behavior — the only difference is appearance. However, some woods have special variants: Archwood has Blazing, Cascading, and Blue Archwood variants with unique properties. Comet wood also has its own set. Check each block's tooltip in JEI to see if it has special behavior.

Compressed variants

Every wood type also has a Compressed Sieve and sometimes a Compressed block form. Compressed Sieves typically process materials faster or accept bulk input. If you are automating, prefer a Compressed Sieve over a regular one. Compressed blocks (like Compressed Andesite, Compressed Blackstone, Compressed Cobbled Deepslate) are storage or crafting intermediates — they are usually made by combining multiple of the base block in a crafting grid.

Picking a wood type

For a uniform look, pick one wood type and craft all your barrels, sieves, and crucibles from it. For performance, use Compressed Sieves where you sift a lot. For special mechanics, seek out Archwood or Comet variants. If you are unsure, open JEI and search "Barrel" — every variant will be listed with its recipe, so you can compare before committing resources.
