Ex Deorum FAQ

20 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get started in Ex Deorum?
Craft a wooden Barrel, a Sieve, and a Crucible, then fill the barrel with water and place a Sieve over it. Sift pebbles and gravel through the Sieve to get ore chunks and other resources, and use the Crucible to melt materials into lava.
How do I sift gravel and sand?
Place a Sieve on top of a Barrel or a solid block, then right-click the Sieve with gravel, sand, or dust in hand. Each sift consumes one item and has a chance to drop ore chunks, gems, or other materials.
How do I make lava in a Crucible?
Place a Crucible over a heat source like a fire or lava, then right-click it with a meltable material such as cobblestone or ore chunks. The Crucible will slowly melt the material into lava, which can then be piped or bucketed out.
Why isn't my Barrel filling with water?
Barrels only fill with water when it rains, or when you place them next to a water source and use a bucket or pipe. Make sure the barrel is not covered by a block above it, as rain cannot reach it otherwise.
What is the difference between a Sieve and a Compressed Sieve?
A Compressed Sieve holds multiple stacks of siftable material and processes them automatically when powered or interacted with. Regular Sieves require manual right-clicking for each item.
How do I get saplings and sticks?
Use a Crook on leaves to get saplings, sticks, and apples at a higher rate than breaking them by hand. Crooks can be crafted from wood and are essential for early tree farming.
Can I automate my Sieve and Barrel setup?
Yes, you can use hoppers, pipes, or other automation mods to feed items into Sieves and pull outputs from Barrels. Compressed Sieves are designed for automation and can process multiple items at once.
Which wood type should I use for Barrels, Sieves, and Crucibles?
All wood types function identically for Barrels, Sieves, and Crucibles, so choose based on aesthetics or available resources. Some modded woods like Archwood may have special variants such as Blazing or Cascading Crucibles with unique properties.
Why am I not getting ore chunks from sifting?
Ore chunks have a chance-based drop rate, so you may need to sift many blocks before getting one. Make sure you are sifting the correct material—gravel, sand, and dust each have different loot tables.
Is Ex Deorum compatible with other mods?
Ex Deorum is designed to work alongside most tech and automation mods, and its blocks can often be interacted with using pipes, hoppers, and other transport systems. Check the mod's configuration options if you need to adjust compatibility settings.
What is the Ex Deorum Mod?
Ex Deorum is a port of the 1.7 SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo by Erasmus_Crowley to 1.20 and beyond. It also borrows ideas from Ex Nihilo Adscensio, YUNoMakeGoodMap, and Ex Compressum, though it does not use code from any of those mods.
What Minecraft versions does Ex Deorum support?
Ex Deorum supports Minecraft versions 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.21, 1.21.1, 26.1.2, and 26.2.
What mod loaders does Ex Deorum run on?
Ex Deorum runs on Forge and NeoForge.
Does Ex Deorum add a SkyBlock world type?
Yes. Unlike the original Ex Nihilo and its ports, Ex Deorum includes a SkyBlock world type out of the box.
Does Ex Deorum add new items and blocks?
Yes. It registers items and blocks such as barrels, sieves, crucibles, compressed blocks, hammers, crooks, ore chunks, pebbles, and watering cans.
What is the watering can in Ex Deorum?
The watering can is an alternative to bone meal that helps plants grow faster and reduces the need for mods like Tree Growing Simulator. There are six tiers, including a wooden watering can given to the player at the start of the world along with a torch.
Are the starting items in Ex Deorum configurable?
Yes. Players begin with a wooden watering can and a torch, and both are configurable.
Does Ex Deorum need other mods to work?
No. The default recipes only cover items from Vanilla Minecraft, and the sieve drops are generous enough that the mod should be playable without Ex Compressum.
Does Ex Deorum have JEI compatibility?
Yes. Ex Deorum has JEI compatibility for all of its blocks, as well as a few useful KubeJS functions.
Can modpack makers add custom barrels, sieves, or crucibles to Ex Deorum?
Yes. Modpack makers can add custom barrels, sieves, and crucibles using configuration files.
