Improving FPS by Reducing Entity Render Distance

Find the Culprit Entities

Large numbers of visible entities — especially ones with models, animations, or name tags — are a common cause of low frame rates, particularly in busy areas like villages, farms, or servers with many players and mobs. The Entity View Distance Mod lets you cut this cost without lowering your overall render distance.

1. Open Options → Video Settings → Entity Distance Settings.

2. Identify the entity categories that are most common in your world (for example, item frames in a storage room, or armor stands in a display area).

3. Reduce the distance for those specific categories first.

Tuning for Performance

  • Start by pulling the sliders for decorative entities (frames, stands, paintings) down aggressively — you rarely need to see these from far away.
  • Leave gameplay-critical entities like hostile mobs at a longer distance so you are not caught off guard.
  • Test in the exact area that was lagging: stand still, watch your FPS counter, and adjust one category at a time so you know what actually helped.

If performance is still poor, combine this with lowering your overall entity distance rather than chunk render distance — you keep the terrain looking far away while cutting the entity cost. Revert changes one at a time if visuals become too aggressive, since entities popping in close can be distracting during combat.
