Reduce Enchantment Levels on Tools and Books

Downgrading Enchantments

Sometimes you need a lower level of an enchantment—perhaps you want Efficiency III instead of Efficiency V, or you need to adjust an enchantment to fit your needs.

How to Downgrade

1. Place the enchanted item or book in the left anvil slot

2. Place a blank book in the right slot

3. Combine them

4. The enchantment transfers to the book at one level lower

5. Repeat this process to step down further if needed

When This Is Useful

• Reduce high-level enchantments that conflict with your playstyle
• Create intermediate-level enchanted books for trading or sharing
• Fine-tune enchantment levels to match specific tool requirements
• Step down powerful enchantments gradually to experiment with different levels

Each downgrade costs experience and produces a book one level below the source enchantment.
