Moving Your Elytra Between the Chest Slot and the Elytra Slot

When You Might Swap

Some players prefer the classic behavior of wearing the Elytra in the chest slot, especially on servers where the mod's slot is disabled or when using certain datapacks. Knowing how to move the item both ways avoids confusion.

Swapping In and Out

1. Open your inventory.

2. To move the Elytra from the chest slot to the dedicated slot, pick it up and drop it into the Elytra slot, then place your chestplate in the chest slot.

3. To reverse this, take the Elytra out of the dedicated slot and place it in the chest armor slot, leaving the Elytra slot empty.

4. Shift-clicking the Elytra will send it to the first valid slot the game finds, which may be either one depending on what is already equipped.

Things to Watch

If the dedicated slot is empty and you shift-click an Elytra, it may go to the chest slot instead. Always check both slots after a quick transfer. On multiplayer, the server controls which slots exist, so a swap that works in singleplayer may not work online. If an item refuses to move, close and reopen the inventory to refresh the slot state.
