Checking Whether a Spawn Egg Is the Right Variant Before You Use It
Variants Are the Real Trap
Many mobs have variants that spawn from the same egg type but look different in world — different colors, sizes, or behaviors. The egg face tells you the mob family, not the specific variant, so you still need a way to confirm before committing.
A Safe Testing Routine
- Build a small, enclosed test pen with a solid floor and walls. Never test an unfamiliar egg in the open.
- Place the egg inside the pen and observe the spawned mob's appearance and behavior.
- If it is the wrong variant, remove it and try again. Keep the pen far from your base so a hostile result cannot reach anything important.
Reading the Face Correctly
Use the face to confirm the family first — that alone prevents most mistakes, like grabbing a Zombie egg when you wanted a Husk. For variants within a family, rely on the tooltip name, not the texture. Treat the face as a fast filter, not a final answer. This habit matters most with illagers, piglins, and the various undead, where a wrong egg can turn a peaceful build session into a fight.
