How to Read Effect Tooltips to Identify an Effect's Source Mod

When you hover over an effect icon in your inventory or HUD, the tooltip expands with extra lines. The most useful of these is the source mod line, which tells you which mod registered that effect. This is invaluable when you are running a large modpack and cannot tell whether a strange buff came from a potion, a food item, a mob ability, or an environmental hazard.

Steps

1. Open your inventory so the effect icons are visible on the side of the screen.

2. Move your cursor over the effect icon and hold it there. The vanilla tooltip appears first, then the mod adds its extra lines.

3. Read the line that names the mod. If the effect originated from vanilla Minecraft, it will typically be attributed accordingly rather than to a third-party mod.

4. Cross-reference that mod name with your mod list to figure out what triggered the effect.

Why This Matters

If you keep getting an unknown debuff in a specific biome or after eating a certain food, the source mod line narrows down the culprit immediately. You can then check that mod's own documentation or config to disable or avoid the trigger, rather than guessing at random items.
