How to Read Potion Effect Descriptions in Your Inventory

Hovering Over Effect Icons

When you have an active potion effect, a small icon appears in your inventory screen (top-right area by default). To read its description, simply move your mouse cursor over that icon and pause. A tooltip will pop up showing a plain-language explanation of what the effect does.

This works for any effect currently applied to you — whether it came from drinking a potion, eating enchanted food, standing near a beacon, or being hit by a mob. You do not need to open any menu or press a key; hovering is enough.

What the Tooltip Shows

The tooltip typically includes the effect's name, a short description of its behavior, and — if you have enabled the option — the source mod and internal effect ID. The description explains things like whether the effect is helpful or harmful, how it changes your stats, and any special conditions tied to it.

If the tooltip does not appear, check that the mod's tooltip display setting is turned on and that you are hovering directly over the icon rather than the empty space beside it. Some inventory layouts shift the icon position, so move slowly across the row of effect icons until the tooltip appears.
