Effect Gems Data Pack FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get my first Effect Gem?
Kill Gem Zombies, which spawn naturally anywhere regular zombies spawn in your world. Each Gem Zombie has a chance to drop one of the 12 different Effect Gems when defeated.
Can Gem Zombies spawn from zombie spawners?
Yes, Gem Zombies can spawn from naturally generated zombie spawners in dungeons and other structures, making spawners a reliable farming location.
How do I use an Effect Gem once I have one?
Place the Effect Gem in your offhand slot (the slot next to your main hand). The gem will automatically grant you its associated status effect as long as it remains in your offhand.
What happens if I switch gems while one is in my offhand?
The previous gem's effect will stop, and the new gem's effect will begin immediately once it's placed in your offhand slot.
Can I use an Effect Gem and a shield at the same time?
No, both items occupy the offhand slot, so you must choose between equipping a gem or a shield.
Do Effect Gems work in the Nether and End?
Yes, Effect Gems function in all dimensions as long as they remain in your offhand slot.
What's the best gem for mining or caving?
Check the guide on choosing the right gem for your activity—different gems provide effects suited to different tasks like mining, combat, or exploration.
Do Gem Zombies drop anything besides gems?
Yes, Gem Zombies have a chance to drop pearls in addition to Effect Gems.
Is there a way to increase how often Gem Zombies drop gems?
See the guide on maximizing gem drops for strategies on farming efficiency and increasing your chances of getting gems from Gem Zombies.
Do Effect Gems work with other mods or datapacks?
Effect Gems is a data pack and should be compatible with most mods, but conflicts can occur if other mods heavily modify zombie behavior or offhand mechanics—test in your specific setup if you encounter issues.
