How to Use Glowstone Dust to Reveal Nearby Mobs

What the Effect Does

Eating Glowstone Dust does not give you a personal Glow buff. Instead, it applies the Glow effect to entities around you. That means nearby mobs — and other players — get outlined and become visible through darkness, similar to the vanilla Glowing effect.

When and How to Use It

  • Caving and mining. Eat Glowstone Dust when you enter a dark cavern. Any mobs hiding in the shadows will be outlined, letting you spot creepers and skeletons before they reach you.
  • Night exploration. On the surface at night, the effect helps you see hostile mobs approaching from a distance.
  • Finding hidden mobs. If something is making noise but you cannot see it, eating Glowstone Dust reveals it through walls and terrain within range.

Things to Keep in Mind

The effect only lasts a short time by default, so eat it when you are already in the dangerous area rather than before travelling there. The range covers entities around you, so it will not reveal mobs far across the map — you need to be reasonably close.

Because Glowstone Dust is also a valuable crafting ingredient, weigh whether you would rather save it for potions or brewing. If you find yourself using it often for cave runs, consider increasing its duration in the config file so each dust lasts longer.
