How to Choose Between Ears and Tails for Custom Player Cosmetics

Both mods add animal features to players, but they work in fundamentally different ways, and picking the right one depends on what you value.

How Ears Works

Ears encodes every feature as pixels inside the player skin. There is no separate model file, no data syncing, and no third-party server involved. Because it is built on a multi-version abstraction, it is lightweight and easy to run across many game versions, even in a browser. The tradeoff is that the shapes are constrained by what can be expressed in skin pixels, so the models are flatter and less animated than a dedicated 3D system.

How Tails Differs

Tails offers richer 3D models and animations, which look more dynamic. The cost is weight: its large rendering system and data-syncing code tie it closely to specific game and loader versions, making updates a burden. It also tends to require more setup to share appearances between players.

Which to Pick

Choose Ears if you want something portable, open source, easy to update, and self-contained in your skin, and you are fine with simpler shapes. Choose Tails if animated 3D models matter more to you than portability. Many players run Ears precisely because it needs no servers and travels with the skin.
