Dynamic View Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I know Dynamic View Mod is actually working?
Watch your server's view distance in the server properties or via a command like /viewdistance while the server is under load — you should see it shrink when tick times rise and grow back when the server recovers. If the value never changes, check that the mod is loaded server-side and that your min and max view distances aren't set to the same number.
What does the average tick time setting actually control?
It sets the tick time the mod balances around — the target it tries to keep your server at. Since tick time maps directly to TPS (a full tick is 50 ms for 20 TPS), setting a lower average tick time means the mod will reduce view distance sooner to protect performance.
Why does my view distance keep bouncing up and down?
The mod is reacting to every tick time fluctuation, so if your server hovers right at the threshold it will constantly adjust. Raising the update frequency interval or setting a slightly more forgiving average tick time smooths out the oscillation.
Does Dynamic View Mod need to be installed on the client too?
No — it's a serverside-only mod, so vanilla and unmodded clients can connect without it. Installing it on the client does nothing currently, though the mod may add client features in the future.
Will this mod reduce my view distance even when the server is fine?
It only lowers view distance once tick time crosses your configured threshold, so a healthy server should sit at or near your max view distance. If it's dropping too early, your average tick time target is probably set too low for your hardware.
What's the difference between min and max chunk view distance?
Max is the ceiling the mod raises view distance to when the server is running smoothly, and min is the floor it won't drop below when lagging. Setting min too low can make the world feel empty during lag spikes, while setting max too high can cause the lag in the first place.
Can I use Dynamic View Mod with other performance mods?
Yes, it's designed as a lightweight utility and generally coexists with performance mods, but avoid running it alongside another mod that also dynamically changes view distance — they'll fight over the same setting. If you use a chunk-loading or pre-generation mod, test together to make sure they don't compound reductions.
How often does the mod update the view distance?
It checks on the update frequency you configure — a shorter interval reacts faster but causes more frequent changes, while a longer interval is steadier but slower to respond to lag. Tune this alongside your average tick time to get the responsiveness you want.
Why is my view distance stuck at the minimum?
Your server is likely staying above the lag threshold consistently, so the mod keeps view distance pinned at the minimum to protect TPS. Either your average tick time target is too aggressive or something else on the server is causing persistent lag that the mod can't fix by itself.
Does lowering view distance actually improve TPS?
Yes — fewer loaded chunks means less work per tick for chunk loading, entity ticking, and sending data to players, which frees up tick time. That's the whole point of the mod: trade some view distance for smoother ticks when the server is struggling.
