How to Make Dynamic Surroundings Sounds and Fog Fit Your Playstyle
The default
Dynamic Surroundings experience is tuned for immersion, but many players want it quieter, scarier, or more subtle. Everything is adjustable through the config, so you can shape the atmosphere without editing files by hand.
Tuning the Audio
Open the mod config and look at the sound categories. You can control biome ambience, cave
sounds, weather audio, and footstep volume separately. If you build a lot, lower footstep and block-place
sounds so they do not dominate. If you play with headphones and want tension, keep cave ambience high but reduce birds and water so the quiet moments stand out. Some categories have a frequency or interval setting rather than just volume, which is useful when a sound plays too often even at low volume.
Shaping the Visuals
Fog is the biggest visual lever. You can disable it entirely, keep only weather fog, or restrict it to specific biomes. If you dislike fog in the Nether or caves but want it during rain, set it per-context. Aurora effects can be toggled and their brightness adjusted. If you run shaders, check whether the mod's fog and the shader's fog conflict, and disable one. After changing several options, walk through a few different biomes to confirm the result feels consistent rather than patchy.
