How to Get the Most Out of Dynamic Surroundings in Caves and at Night

Dynamic Surroundings is at its best underground and after dark, where its ambience and effects change how the game feels. A few tweaks make those situations much more atmospheric.

Cave Atmosphere

Caves get echo, drips, and distant ambience from the mod. To lean into this, keep cave sound categories enabled and raise their frequency slightly, but lower surface sounds so the transition feels sharp when you go underground. Fog in caves can be enabled on its own even if you disabled surface fog, which adds depth without hurting visibility outdoors. If you mine a lot, keep footstep sounds on but reduce their volume so you can still hear hostile mobs.

Night and Weather

At night the mod changes sky and ambient audio. Enable aurora effects if you want clear-night visuals, and keep weather audio on so rain and thunder feel distinct from daytime. If you play with shaders, verify that night sky rendering is not being overwritten. For survival players, avoid raising ambience so high that it masks mob sounds; the goal is atmosphere, not confusion. Walk between a forest, a cave, and open plains at night after adjusting to confirm each biome still sounds and looks distinct.
