How to Survive the Increased Difficulty of the New Ancient City

The redesign makes ancient cities more dangerous: tighter spaces, taller walls, and less room to run. Warden encounters are harder to escape because you cannot easily break line of sight down a wide avenue.

Move Quietly and Slowly

Sneak whenever you are near sculk. In narrow corridors, a single misplaced step can trigger a shrieker with nowhere to flee. Place wool under your feet in high-risk rooms before looting. If you must cross a sensor field, break the sensors with a hoe or cover them with wool rather than sprinting past.

Plan Your Escape Route

Before entering any deep section, decide which direction you will retreat. Because roads are narrower, you cannot dodge around a Warden — you need a clear path back the way you came. Leave your junction markers in place so you can sprint out without guessing. Keep a stack of blocks to wall yourself off if a Warden spawns nearby, and remember that the taller, thinner walls mean you cannot pillar straight up to safety. If you hear the shriek warning, back out immediately rather than pushing deeper for one more chest.
