Dungeons and Taverns Ancient City Overhaul Data Pack FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I find an ancient city with this datapack installed?
Ancient Cities still generate in the Deep Dark biome the same way as vanilla, so locate a Deep Dark biome and dig down until you hit the city structures. The overhaul only changes what generates inside the city, not where cities spawn.
Why does my ancient city look different from vanilla?
This datapack replaces the vanilla ancient city layout entirely, so the old deepslate cobblestone ring structures are gone and you'll see taller, thinner walls, narrower pathways, and new smaller buildings instead. If you're still seeing vanilla cities, the datapack isn't active in that world.
How do I not get lost in the new ancient city layout?
The narrower roads and compact buildings make the city feel like a maze, so place torches or other markers at intersections as you go. Following the outer walls inward tends to work better than wandering the interior paths randomly.
Where is the best loot in the overhauled ancient city?
Loot chests are spread across the new smaller houses and structures rather than concentrated in one central vault, and digging through the city floor can also turn up ancient fragments and other valuables. Check every building you pass instead of rushing to the center.
How do I survive the increased difficulty of the new ancient city?
The claustrophobic layout means you have less room to maneuver around sculk sensors and shriekers, so move slowly and avoid triggering them. Bring blocks to wall off shriekers and keep an escape route open behind you.
How do I loot the ancient city efficiently in one trip?
Plan a route that sweeps the outer buildings first and works inward, since the compact layout means you can clear structures quickly if you don't backtrack. Bring shulker boxes or extra inventory space because the improved loot tables mean more items per chest.
Does this datapack work with other ancient city mods or datapacks?
Any other datapack or mod that also modifies ancient city generation will likely conflict, since both are trying to replace the same structures. Remove or disable overlapping structure datapacks before using this one.
Will this datapack lag my game or affect performance?
It only changes world generation, so there's no ongoing performance cost once chunks are generated. The main impact is during initial chunk generation when the new structures are being placed.
Does the overhauled ancient city still have the warden and sculk shriekers?
Yes, the Warden and sculk mechanics are unchanged, so shriekers still summon it and the darkness effect still applies. The difficulty increase comes from the tighter layout making it harder to avoid triggering them.
Do I need to start a new world for the ancient city changes to show up?
Yes, world generation changes only apply to chunks that haven't been generated yet. Existing ancient cities in already-loaded chunks will keep their vanilla layout, so you need to explore new territory or start fresh.
