Use Depth Map Shaders to Explore Cave Systems More Effectively

Leverage Depth Visualization for Cave Mapping

The depth map effect transforms how you perceive vertical space. When exploring caves, the shader makes deeper sections appear distinctly different from shallower areas, helping you mentally map the cave's structure without constantly checking coordinates.

Scout from Above

Climb to the surface above a cave system and look down. The depth map will show you the cave's layout from above—deeper caverns appear in one color range while shallow sections show differently. This gives you a preview of what to expect before descending.

Navigate Safely

When inside caves, the depth effect helps you judge distances to walls and ceilings more accurately. Blocks further away display with clear visual separation, reducing the chance of accidentally walking off ledges into darkness.

Find Valuable Levels

Deeper ore deposits appear visually distinct from surrounding stone. While the shader doesn't highlight ores directly, the depth visualization helps you recognize when you've reached deeper levels where rare materials spawn, guiding your mining strategy.
