How to Increase Your Render Distance with Distant Horizons

Understanding the Two Render Distances

Distant Horizons adds its own render distance on top of vanilla Minecraft's. Vanilla chunks (the ones you actually interact with) are controlled by the normal video settings, while Distant Horizons handles the simplified LOD (level of detail) terrain that appears beyond them. To see far, you want a modest vanilla distance and a large Distant Horizons distance.

Adjusting the Settings

1. Open the Distant Horizons config screen. You can usually reach it from the mod list or from an in-game keybind/button in the video settings menu.

2. Find the render distance option for Distant Horizons (sometimes labeled as LOD or DH render distance). Raise it gradually rather than maxing it out immediately.

3. Watch your FPS and memory usage after each increase. If the game stutters or crashes, lower it.

4. Keep vanilla render distance moderate. A smaller vanilla distance frees up resources for the Distant Horizons terrain.

5. If you use shaders, check that your shader pack supports Distant Horizons; otherwise the far terrain may look flat or mismatched.

Tips

  • The first time you load a world, Distant Horizons needs to generate LOD data. Fly or walk around to let it build up.
  • On servers, the distance you can see may be limited by what the server sends you.
  • Lowering other settings like clouds, particles, and entity distance helps offset the cost of a big view.
