Despawning Eggs Hatch Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

Why aren't my eggs hatching into chickens?
By default, eggs only hatch when they are sitting on a hay block, so check that first. Also make sure the egg is actually despawning naturally rather than being picked up or destroyed, and that there aren't already too many chickens nearby.
How long does an egg have to sit before it hatches?
An egg hatches right before it despawns, which happens after the standard despawn timer of about 5 minutes (6000 ticks). You don't need to do anything during that time except leave the egg alone.
Do eggs need to be on hay to hatch?
Yes, by default the mod only lets eggs hatch if they're sitting on a hay block. This is intentional to prevent uncontrolled chicken populations, but it can be changed in the config.
How do I make eggs hatch on any block instead of just hay?
Open the mod's config file and look for the setting that restricts hatching to hay blocks, then disable or change it. Once that restriction is off, eggs on other blocks can hatch too.
Why did my egg disappear without hatching?
The egg only has a chance to hatch, and that chance is controlled by the eggWillHatchChance setting (default is 100%). It also won't hatch if there are too many chickens nearby or if it wasn't on a valid block like hay.
How do I stop eggs from hatching into chickens?
Set the eggWillHatchChance config option to 0 so eggs always despawn normally. Alternatively, keep eggs off hay blocks if you want to leave the hatching mechanic enabled for other setups.
How do I control how many chickens can spawn from eggs?
Use the onlyHatchIfLessChickensAroundThan setting, which defaults to 50. Eggs won't hatch if the number of chickens within a 32-block radius is already at or above that limit.
What's the radius the mod checks for nearby chickens?
The mod checks a 32-block radius around the egg when deciding whether to hatch. If the chicken count in that area is at or above your configured limit, the egg won't hatch.
Can I make eggs hatch into adult chickens instead of babies?
Hatched chickens are baby chicks by default, which is the intended behavior. Check the config for a setting related to chick age if you want to change this, but the default is always a baby.
Will this mod cause lag on my server with lots of eggs?
The mod is designed to avoid lag by capping how many chickens can spawn in an area, so it shouldn't cause problems on its own. If you're worried, lower the chicken limit or reduce the hatch chance in the config.
