Default Server Properties Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get started with the Default Server Properties Mod?
Create a file named default-server.properties in your main game folder (the same folder that contains your mods and config directories). Add only the server settings you want to change, then generate a new world — the mod applies them automatically on first creation.
Does the mod apply to worlds I already created?
No. The settings are only applied when a world is first generated, so existing worlds keep their current server.properties. To test your file, create a fresh world instead of loading an old one.
Do I need to copy the whole server.properties file into default-server.properties?
No, you only list the properties you actually want to change. Any setting you leave out keeps its normal default value, so a short file with just your tweaks is enough.
Where exactly does default-server.properties go?
It goes in the main game folder — the same directory that holds your mods folder and options.txt, not inside the world save or the config folder. If the mod can't find it there, nothing gets applied.
Why aren't my settings being applied to new worlds?
The most common causes are a misspelled filename, the file sitting in the wrong folder, or testing on a world that already existed before you added the file. Double-check the name is exactly default-server.properties and generate a brand-new world.
Can I use this to set the world name and MOTD for new worlds?
Yes. Add the level-name and motd properties to your default-server.properties file, and every newly generated world will use those values instead of the vanilla defaults.
Does this mod work on a dedicated server, or only in singleplayer?
It's aimed at modpack developers ensuring consistent settings for players, so it's mainly used on the client side when worlds are created. If you run a dedicated server, you'd normally just edit server.properties directly.
Will this mod conflict with other mods that change server settings?
It only writes settings at world creation, so mods that change server.properties afterward can still override it. If another mod also sets defaults, whichever runs last during world creation wins.
Can I ship default-server.properties inside my modpack so players get the right settings automatically?
Yes — that's the intended use. Include the file in your modpack's main game folder, and every player who creates a new world will get your configured settings without doing anything manually.
Does the mod affect performance or cause lag?
No. It only reads your properties file once when a world is generated and then gets out of the way, so it has no ongoing impact on gameplay or server performance.
