How to Fix the 'Slipped in Water' Death Message

Why This Message Exists

Vanilla Minecraft has a rare, awkward death message that can appear when a player dies in water under unusual circumstances. Death Knell replaces that odd line with a cleaner "slipped in water" message. If you are seeing the strange vanilla wording instead, the mod is either not loaded, not applying to that death, or another mod is intercepting the death event first.

Confirming the Mod Is Working

1. Check that Death Knell appears in your mod list for the instance you are actually launching.

2. Reproduce a water death: take damage in water, or drown, and read the chat line.

3. If the vanilla oddity still shows, remove other mods that touch death messages or chat formatting and retest.

When It Still Will Not Change

Death messages are chosen at the moment of death, so a message already sent to chat cannot be rewritten. If you are testing on a server, confirm the mod is installed on the *server* side, not just the client — death messages are generated server-side and broadcast to everyone. On singleplayer the integrated server handles this, so a client-only install is fine. If the message appears for other players but not you, check for a client-side chat mod filtering or reformatting the line.
