Death Knell Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I know if the Death Knell Mod is working?
Just die in any way and check the chat message. If it's a message you don't recognize from vanilla, the mod is active. You can also trigger a common one like drowning or falling to confirm new text appears.
How do I get the cookie death message?
Have another player force-feed you cookies until you die, since the message triggers when a killer makes the victim eat too many cookies. In singleplayer you can't trigger this one yourself, so it needs a second player or a command-spawned setup.
How do I see all the death messages without dying over and over?
You can read the full list on the mod's wiki or description page, though it warns that spoiling them ruins the fun. In-game, the fastest way is to trigger deaths deliberately in a test world rather than waiting for them naturally.
Why did I get a 'slipped in water' death message?
That message is the mod's fix for a rare vanilla death message that normally doesn't display properly. It appears when you die in water under the circumstances that vanilla handles poorly, so seeing it means the mod is patching that gap.
Can I turn off or reduce the Death Knell messages?
Yes, you can disable or reduce them through the mod's config file or in-game config menu if one is provided. Check the config options for toggles that control which messages appear or how often they show.
Do the new death messages replace vanilla ones?
Some messages are variations on existing vanilla death messages, while others are entirely new and only appear under specific events or circumstances. So you'll still see familiar vanilla messages alongside the mod's additions.
Will Death Knell work with other mods that change death messages?
It may conflict with mods that also rewrite death messages, since both try to control the same chat output. If you notice missing or duplicated messages, test with only one death-message mod enabled at a time.
Does Death Knell affect performance or cause lag?
No, it only changes chat text when a death occurs, so it has essentially no impact on performance. It doesn't add entities, blocks, or tick-based logic, so you can run it alongside most modpacks safely.
Are more death messages coming in future updates?
Yes, the mod is still in development and the author plans to add new death messages over time. Keep an eye on the mod's update page so you don't miss new additions.
Do I need to configure anything after installing Death Knell?
No setup is required, the mod works out of the box and starts adding messages immediately. You only need to open the config if you want to disable messages or adjust how they behave.
