Making the Dark Souls Death Screen Fit Your Playstyle

DarkMenu swaps the plain "You Died!" screen for a Dark Souls-inspired one. Here is how to get the most out of it and fix the common annoyances.

What the death screen does

The screen shows a stylised death message with the RPG font and darker framing instead of the vanilla red overlay. It appears every time you die in survival, including deaths in the Nether and End. Because it is a visual override, it does not change respawn mechanics, keep-inventory rules, or where you respawn — those are still controlled by your world settings and any other mods.

If you want the vanilla screen back

You cannot toggle the death screen off inside DarkMenu itself. Your options are to disable the mod entirely for that world, or to override its death screen texture with a resource pack that restores the vanilla look. If you only dislike the font, a font-only resource pack is the lighter fix.

Combining with other UI mods

If another mod also restyles the death screen, only one wins. Put the pack or mod you prefer higher in the load order. Test by dying in a throwaway creative-then-survival world rather than risking a hardcore run.
