Navigate caves safely in complete darkness

Prepare your lighting strategy

Before entering a cave system, equip yourself with multiple light sources. Torches are your primary tool—craft plenty before descent. Consider bringing a secondary light source like lanterns or soul lanterns as backup in case your primary torch is lost or dropped.

Explore methodically

Place torches along cave walls as you progress deeper. This creates a visible path back to the surface and prevents disorientation in pitch-black tunnels. Move slowly and deliberately rather than sprinting, as the shader removes all ambient light, making sudden drops and lava pools invisible until you're directly adjacent to them.

Combat underground threats

Monsters spawn freely in the absolute darkness. Keep your torch raised and scan ahead constantly. When hostile mobs appear, they'll be barely visible—listen for sounds and watch for movement. Consider mining in groups or using additional mods that allow handheld torches to free up your off-hand for weapons or shields.

Mark important locations

Use distinctive torch patterns or colored wool blocks to mark mineshaft entrances, valuable ore deposits, or dangerous areas. This helps you relocate resources and avoid hazards on return trips.
