Dark Extreme Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I actually see anything at night with this mod on?
You need to carry a light source like torches, lanterns, or glowstone to create visibility around you. The mod removes all ambient light, so artificial light sources become your only way to navigate dark areas.
Can I hold a torch in my hand while playing?
Not without additional mods—Dark Extreme Shaders doesn't include hand-held torch mechanics on its own. You'll need to install a separate mod that adds this feature if you want to light up areas while keeping your hands free.
Why is my cave completely black even with torches placed?
Make sure your torches are actually placed in the world or held by you; the shader only removes natural light, not light from placed blocks. If torches still seem dim, check that your brightness setting in Minecraft isn't turned down too low.
Does this work with OptiFine or do I need something else?
Dark Extreme Shaders only works with Iris or Oculus loaders, not OptiFine. You'll need to switch to one of these loaders to use this shader pack.
Will this shader make my game lag?
No—Dark Extreme Shaders is designed to run smoothly on older computers because it uses simple lighting calculations. Most players experience no lag spikes even on lower-end hardware.
How do I prepare my base for extreme darkness?
Build your lighting system before nightfall by placing torches, lanterns, or other light blocks around your base perimeter and inside. Plan pathways with regular light sources so you can move safely between areas without getting lost in darkness.
Can I turn off the darkness in specific areas or just disable the mod?
Dark Extreme Shaders applies globally and doesn't have built-in toggles for specific areas—you'd need to disable the shader entirely if you want normal lighting back. Consider using it only for specific worlds or challenges rather than your main survival world.
Why do caves look completely black even at the entrance?
The shader removes all natural light sources, including sunlight penetrating cave openings. You must bring torches or other light blocks with you to explore caves at all.
Does this shader affect underwater visibility?
Yes—underwater areas become pitch black just like caves and nights, making underwater exploration dangerous without proper lighting. Bring waterproof light sources like lanterns if you plan to explore the ocean.
What's the best way to survive a horror challenge with this mod?
Establish a well-lit base as your safe zone, mark safe paths with torches or lanterns, and always carry extra light sources when venturing out. Avoid traveling at night and stick to lit areas to prevent getting lost or ambushed in total darkness.
