How to Change a Painting's Image Without Breaking It

The Basic Swap

You no longer need to punch a painting off the wall and gamble on a new random one. As long as you have a spare painting item in hand, you can reroll the artwork in place.

1. Place a painting on a wall as you normally would.

2. Obtain another painting item (craft one, or pull one from a chest).

3. Hold that painting in your main hand.

4. Look directly at the placed painting and right-click it.

The placed painting's image immediately changes to a different motive of the same size. The painting item in your hand is consumed in the process, so bring several if you plan to cycle through a lot of options.

Things to Know

  • The new image is always the same dimensions as the old one, so it will never overflow the wall space or shrink into a gap.
  • If you only have one painting item and you use it, you'll need to craft or find another before you can cycle again.
  • This works on paintings placed by anyone, so you can fix up a friend's build too.

Once you're happy with the result, stop clicking. The painting stays exactly as it is until you cycle it again.
