Configured Defaults Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get started with Configured Defaults after installing it?
Create a folder named configureddefaults in your game or server directory, then place the config files and folders you want distributed inside it. On the next launch, the mod copies anything missing from that folder into the real config locations.
Does Configured Defaults overwrite configs players have already changed?
No, it only copies files that are missing. If a config already exists in the game directory, the mod leaves it alone, so player edits are preserved.
Where exactly does the configureddefaults folder go?
It goes in the same directory the mod scans for missing files, which is your main game or server instance folder. Files inside it mirror the paths they should be copied to, so a config for a mod goes in the matching subfolder.
Can I use Configured Defaults to force options.txt settings on first launch?
Yes. Place your prepared options.txt inside the configureddefaults folder, and it will be copied into the game directory when no options.txt exists yet. Once the file exists, the mod won't overwrite it.
Why aren't my default configs being copied?
The most common causes are a misspelled folder name, files placed at the wrong path inside configureddefaults, or the target config already existing. Check that the folder is named exactly configureddefaults and that the internal paths match where the files should end up.
Does it work on servers as well as clients?
Yes, the mod copies missing files into whichever game or server directory it runs in. Install it on both sides if you want defaults applied to client and server configs separately.
How do I stop new mods from generating their own configs?
Add the config files those mods would generate into the configureddefaults folder before players launch. Because the files already exist when the mod loads, the mods use your predefined settings instead of writing their own.
Can it copy entire folders, or only single files?
It handles both files and folders. You can drop a whole config directory into configureddefaults and the mod will copy the missing contents into place.
Will this conflict with other config management mods?
It generally coexists fine because it only acts on missing files and doesn't touch existing ones. If another mod also writes defaults on first launch, whichever runs first may win, so test your pack to confirm behavior.
Does Configured Defaults affect performance or load times?
It only performs file copies when files are missing, so the impact is negligible. There's no ongoing runtime overhead once the defaults have been applied.
