Understand How Stacked Protection Enchantments Reduce Damage

How Protection Stacking Works

When multiple protection enchantments exist on the same armor piece, each one independently calculates its damage reduction based on its enchantment level. The reductions stack together, meaning you receive cumulative defense rather than one enchantment overriding another.

Damage Type Coverage

  • Protection: Reduces all damage types
  • Fire Protection: Reduces fire and lava damage specifically
  • Blast Protection: Reduces explosion damage from creepers, TNT, and similar sources
  • Projectile Protection: Reduces damage from arrows, tridents, and other projectiles

If you're hit by fire damage while wearing armor with both Protection and Fire Protection, both enchantments apply their reduction simultaneously.

Practical Example

Wearing a chestplate with all four enchantments at level 4 means you receive protection against every damage source you might encounter. A creeper explosion, arrow volley, or lava pool will all be significantly mitigated by the appropriate enchantment layers working together.
