How to Use Combat Roll to Escape Danger and Traverse Terrain
Dodging in Fights
Rolling is not just for avoiding damage — it repositions you. Roll backward to create space from a melee mob, roll sideways to slip past a charging enemy, or roll forward to close distance before striking. Against ranged attackers, roll perpendicular to the incoming projectile rather than straight back, since arrows lead your movement.
Combine rolls with blocking or attacking: roll out of a hit, then immediately swing. The brief invulnerability during the roll lets you survive hits you would otherwise take.
Movement and Terrain Tricks
Because the roll is a directional dash, you can use it to cross small gaps, hop over hazards, or quickly move between cover. Rolling off a ledge still applies fall damage unless something else prevents it, so do not treat it as a safe fall.
Rolling into water or onto ice behaves differently than on solid ground — test these surfaces so you know how far you travel. In tight caves, roll along corridors to move fast, but be careful near lava or cliffs where a mistimed roll can drop you into danger.
Keep an eye on the cooldown so you always have a roll available when a creeper sneaks up or a mob ambushes you from behind.
