Coloured Tooltips Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I change the tooltip color in Coloured Tooltips?
Open config/coloredtooltips-client.toml in your instance's config folder and edit the color value, which is written as an ARGB hex string. Save the file and the change applies to tooltips rendered through Forge's tooltip code.
What is an ARGB hex string and how do I write one?
It's a hex color like a normal RGB code but with two extra characters at the front for transparency, so the format is alpha-red-green-blue. For example, fully opaque white would start with FF followed by the RGB values.
What do the first two characters of the color value do?
They control the alpha, or transparency, of the tooltip background. Lower alpha values make the tooltip more see-through, while higher values make it more solid.
Why won't my tooltip color change after editing the config?
Make sure you edited coloredtooltips-client.toml and not another config file, and that you saved the file before relaunching. If the game was already running when you edited it, restart so the config is re-read.
Do I need to restart Minecraft after changing the color?
Yes, the config is read at startup, so changes made while the game is running won't take effect until you restart. Close the game, edit the file, then relaunch.
Which tooltips does this mod actually affect?
It changes any tooltip that uses Forge's tooltip rendering code, which includes item tooltips and certain GUI tooltips like creative tab names. Tooltips drawn by other systems or mods that bypass Forge's rendering may not be affected.
Can I set a different color for different tooltips?
No, the mod applies one color setting to all tooltips that use Forge's rendering code. To get per-item or per-category colors you'd need a different mod.
Why does my tooltip text look unreadable after changing the color?
The text color and the background alpha both affect readability, so a very transparent background over a bright scene can wash out the text. Try raising the alpha value or picking a color with more contrast against the text.
Does Coloured Tooltips work with other tooltip mods?
It works alongside mods that use Forge's standard tooltip rendering, but mods that replace or heavily modify tooltip rendering can conflict or override the color. If colors look wrong with another tooltip mod installed, test with only one enabled.
Will this mod hurt my performance or cause lag?
No, it only changes the color value used when tooltips are drawn, so it has no meaningful impact on performance. Any lag you see is almost certainly from something else.
