How to Recolor Beds, Shulker Boxes, and Other Interactive Blocks

Why These Blocks Behave Differently

Beds and shulker boxes are colorable, but they also have their own right-click behavior — a bed sets your spawn point, and a shulker box opens its inventory. A plain right-click will trigger that behavior instead of the colorize action.

Using Sneak to Force Recoloring

To recolor an interactive block, hold the dye and sneak while you right-click.

1. Put the dye in your hotbar and select it.

2. Hold your sneak key.

3. Right-click the bed or shulker box.

4. The block recolors and one dye is used.

If sneaking still opens the GUI, try right-clicking a different face of the block, or break and replace it in the desired color if the interaction refuses to cooperate.

Practical Tips

  • Recolor a shulker box before filling it, so you can color-code storage without emptying it first.
  • For beds, recolor while the bed is placed; you do not need to craft a new one.
  • Keep dyes sorted in a nearby chest when you are recoloring a bedroom or storage room, since each block consumes one dye.
  • If a block simply will not recolor no matter what, confirm it is a colorable variant — a plain chest, for example, has no color variants and cannot be dyed.
