Understand why XP orbs look different and how merging works

If you've just added Clumps Mod and notice fewer or larger-looking XP orbs, this is how it works.

What the mod does

  • Merging: When many XP orbs are in a small area, they combine into one entity. That entity carries the total XP of the orbs that were merged.
  • Instant pickup: When an orb touches you, you collect it immediately.

See it in action

1. Go to a safe area in a test world.

2. Kill several mobs in one place, or break a stack of XP-giving blocks like ore, so many orbs spawn at once.

3. Watch the orbs. Instead of a swarm of small ones, you should see fewer, larger-sized orbs.

4. Walk into them. Your XP bar goes up straight away.

Good to know

  • Total experience is the same as vanilla. Merging only changes how many entities exist.
  • Orbs that are far apart won't merge. The mod groups orbs that are close together.
  • Because it has no items or recipes, you won't find anything for it in the crafting menu or creative tabs. It works quietly in the background.
