Using Shift, Control, and Alt for Different Sort Orders
Modifier Keys Change the Order
Client Sort Mod does not just have one sort order. While hovering over the inventory you want to organize, you can hold a modifier key and then press the sort keybind to apply a different arrangement. The three modifiers are Shift, Control, and Alt, and each one produces its own sorting behavior.
So the workflow is: hover the slots, hold the modifier, press the middle mouse button. Releasing the modifier and pressing the plain key again returns you to the default sort.
Choosing the Right Order
Different orders suit different situations. One arrangement is useful when you want identical items consolidated into neat stacks, while another is better when you are comparing gear or scanning for a specific item by name. Because the exact ordering differs per modifier, the fastest way to learn them is to test each one on a throwaway chest: fill it with a mix of blocks, tools, and food, then sort it once with no modifier, once with Shift, once with Control, and once with Alt, and note which layout you prefer.
Practical Tips
Sort before you start crafting or building so your hotbar and inventory stay readable. If a modifier does not seem to change anything, another mod may be capturing that key — try a different modifier or rebind the sort key. Keep in mind sorting only affects the container you are hovering, so you can leave a chest untouched while tidying only your own inventory.
