How to keep your server or game smooth while pregenerating

Chunk generation is heavy work. A few habits keep the run efficient and keep other players from suffering.

Before you start

  • Pregenerate when few or no players are online. A dedicated pass on an empty server is the fastest and safest option.
  • Back up your world first, especially if it has modded terrain, so you can roll back if something goes wrong.
  • Give the server or game enough RAM. Tools that leak memory are a common reason pregeneration fails, but you still need headroom for chunk data.

While it runs

1. Stay near the centre of the task or stay out of the way. You don't need to walk around because the mod loads chunks itself.

2. Avoid running other heavy tasks such as large redstone machines or many mob farms.

3. If the game stutters badly or the server TPS drops, run /pregen pause.

4. Check the mod's config file for options that affect how aggressively it works, and change them only if you understand the setting.

Afterwards

Restart the world or server once the task finishes. Then fly or teleport to the edge of the pregenerated area to confirm there are no lag spikes from new chunks.
