How to Build a Road or Path with Chisel Variants
Choosing the Right Variant
For paths, the Road variant is the obvious choice, but you can also use Tiles Small, Tiles Medium, Layers, or Cracked Bricks for a worn look. Andesite Road gives a smooth, paved appearance; Tiles Small works for cobbled paths.
Laying the Path
1. Decide your route and width. A 2-3 block wide path feels natural.
2. Place your base andesite along the route.
3. Use the chisel tool to convert each block to Road, or pre-convert stacks in the Chisel Table and place them.
4. Add borders using Pillar, Panel, or Solid Bricks to define the edges.
5. Mix in Cracked or Chaotic variants occasionally for age and wear.
Detailing
- Use Slanted or Zag variants at corners for diagonal transitions.
- Place Layers or a different tile size at intersections to suggest paving changes.
- Add lighting with lanterns or torches on fence posts along the path.
Performance Note
Chisel variants are full blocks, so they do not cause lighting or collision issues. However, using many different variants in a small area can increase block entity or model count on some setups. If you experience lag, simplify your palette to a few variants.
