Craft Your First Map Without a Compass

Gather Paper and Dye

Collect 8 paper from sugar cane or find it in dungeon loot. Paper is renewable and easy to farm early game. For the dye component, you have two options:

• Black Dye: Craft from ink sacs (drop from squids) or find it in various loot chests
• Ink Sac: Kill squids in water or farm them in a mob farm

Craft the Map

Open your crafting table and arrange the materials:

• Place 8 paper in a square pattern around the edges
• Place 1 black dye or ink sac in the center

This recipe replaces the vanilla compass-based map recipe. You'll receive a blank map that you can immediately use for exploration.

Use Your Map

Hold the map in your hand and right-click to activate it. The map will begin filling in as you explore, revealing terrain, structures, and landmarks around your current location. You can create multiple maps to chart different regions of your world.
