Cheaper Maps Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Do I need a compass to make a map with this mod?
No. The mod removes the compass requirement entirely. You only need paper and black dye (or ink sac) to craft a map.
How much paper do I need for one map?
You need 8 paper and 1 black dye or ink sac per map. Paper is easy to get from sugar cane, making maps accessible very early in the game.
Can I still make maps the old way with a compass?
The mod replaces the original recipe entirely, so the compass-based recipe is no longer available. You must use the new recipe with paper and dye.
Where do I get black dye for maps?
Black dye comes from ink sacs (dropped by squids) or by crafting it from other dyes. Ink sacs are the easiest early-game source.
Do maps work the same way as vanilla maps?
Yes. Once crafted, maps function identically to vanilla maps—they reveal terrain as you explore and can be cloned or locked at cartography tables.
Can I use this mod in multiplayer?
Yes, if it's installed on the server (or as a data pack), all players will use the cheaper recipe. Make sure everyone has the mod or data pack loaded.
Does this mod affect performance?
No. Cheaper Maps Mod is lightweight and only changes a crafting recipe, so it has no impact on game performance or FPS.
What if I want to use a compass for something else?
Compasses still exist and work normally for navigation and crafting other items—the mod only removes them from the map recipe.
Can I make multiple maps at once?
Yes. You can craft maps in bulk like any other recipe, and each map will track a separate area of your world.
Does this work with other exploration mods?
Yes. Cheaper Maps Mod is compatible with most exploration and navigation mods since it only modifies the map crafting recipe.
