Cheaper Compasses Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

What is the Cheaper Compasses recipe?
The compass uses one iron ingot and three iron nuggets in place of the four iron ingots from vanilla. The rest of the recipe is unchanged, so you still need redstone dust. If you're unsure of the layout, look the compass up in a recipe viewer or the in-game recipe book.
Where do I get iron nuggets for the compass?
Craft an iron ingot into nine nuggets at a crafting table. You can also smelt iron tools and armor in a furnace or blast furnace, which gives nuggets back.
How much iron does the cheaper compass save me?
Vanilla needs four full ingots. This recipe needs one ingot plus three nuggets, which is a third of an ingot since nine nuggets make one. That is roughly a third of the original cost.
Can I still craft a compass the old way with four iron ingots?
No. The mod replaces the vanilla recipe instead of adding a second one, so the four-ingot version is not meant to work. Use the ingot-and-nuggets recipe.
My compass recipe isn't working. What am I doing wrong?
The usual mistake is using four ingots, or forgetting the redstone dust. Use exactly one iron ingot, three iron nuggets and the redstone dust. Check that the pattern matches the recipe shown in your recipe book or viewer.
Does the cheaper compass work differently from a normal compass?
No. Only the crafting cost changes, so it behaves exactly like a vanilla compass. In the Overworld the needle points to the world spawn point.
Why is my compass spinning randomly?
That is vanilla behavior, not a mod bug. A compass spins in dimensions like the Nether and the End because it has no spawn point to point to there.
Does this mod change the lodestone compass or recovery compass?
The mod only touches the regular compass recipe. Other compass-type items keep their vanilla recipes. Note that a lodestone compass is made from a compass, so it gets cheaper indirectly.
Is Cheaper Compasses compatible with other mods?
It only changes one recipe, so it should work alongside most mods. A mod that also changes the compass recipe could conflict with it. If a compass looks wrong, check your recipe viewer to see which recipe is active.
Will this mod hurt my game's performance?
It is unlikely to. It only swaps one crafting recipe and adds no new blocks, entities or world generation, so you shouldn't notice any difference in performance.
