Chat Tools Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I open the Chat Tools config screen?
Open the mod list from the main menu or pause screen and click the config button next to Chat Tools, or use the Mod Menu config entry if your loader provides one. From there you can toggle timestamps, translation, notifications, and other chat options.
Why aren't timestamps showing up on my chat messages?
Timestamps are off by default, so enable them in the Chat Tools config first. If they still don't appear, check that another chat mod isn't overriding the chat display, since conflicting chat mods can hide the timestamp prefix.
How do I translate a chat message I don't understand?
Enable translation in the config, then use the translate keybind or the option in the chat context for the message you want translated. The translated text appears alongside or in place of the original, depending on your settings.
What is the Session Identifier and why does it matter?
The Session Identifier is a Chat Tools-specific term: in single-player it matches your current save name, and in multiplayer it matches the server address. It's used to keep your chat history, settings, or notifications tied to the right world or server.
How do I scroll back through my chat history?
Use the chat navigation keys while the chat is open to move up and down through older messages. Your position in the history is preserved so you can keep reading without losing your place.
How do I set up custom notifications for chat messages?
Open the notifications section of the config and add a rule with the pattern or keyword you want to watch for. When a matching message arrives, Chat Tools triggers your chosen notification, such as a sound or on-screen alert.
What's the difference between the Pattern and Regular Expression options?
The Pattern is the general term for the Regular Expression pattern you provide. Related Regular Expressions use the matches() method, while the Pattern itself uses MULTILINE mode and matches via the find() method, so partial matches inside a message will still trigger.
Why do my regex notification rules not match anything?
Check that your pattern is valid and remember it's evaluated with find() in MULTILINE mode, so it can match anywhere in the message rather than the whole line. Also note that all color codes (§.) are stripped from player messages before matching, so don't include them in your pattern.
How do I see the keys and default values for config options?
Enable Advanced Tooltips with F3 + H, then hover over a config item to see its key, default value, and extra details. This is the fastest way to learn what each option does without leaving the screen.
Will Chat Tools work with my other chat or performance mods?
Chat Tools supports multiple Minecraft versions via macro replacement, and behavior may differ slightly between versions. If another mod also modifies chat rendering, expect possible conflicts with timestamps or formatting, so test with your modpack and adjust settings as needed.
