Lighting Flooded Dungeons and Underwater Areas with Ceiling Torches
Why Ceiling Torches Help Underwater
Flooded dungeons, ocean ruins, and submerged builds are awkward to light because floor and wall torches are hard to reach or get washed out visually. Ceiling torches let you hang light sources from the roof of a flooded room, keeping the floor clear and giving even coverage from above.
Step-by-Step
1. Drain or partially drain the room if you can, or work from a breathing spot.
2. Swim up to the ceiling and look at the underside of a solid block.
3. Place your torch. It will hang down and continue to emit light even with water around it.
4. Space torches across the ceiling so the whole room is covered. Aim for even gaps rather than clustering them.
Tips
- Soul torches give a different color light and are useful for themed underwater builds.
- If a ceiling block is not solid, replace it with a solid block first, then attach the torch.
- For very large flooded areas, combine ceiling torches with glowstone or sea lanterns in the walls to avoid dark corners.
- Ceiling torches also work well in dripstone caves and other damp, low-visibility spaces.
