How to run Fabric mods and plugins together on one server

Cardboard's main use is letting a Fabric server run both Fabric mods and Bukkit-style plugins. The two live in separate folders and do different jobs.

Set up the folders

  • Fabric mods go in mods.
  • Plugins go in plugins.
  • Cardboard itself belongs in mods with your other Fabric mods.

What players need

  • Plugins run only on the server, so players need nothing for them.
  • Mods that add blocks, items or other content generally need to be installed on the client too, as on any Fabric server. Plugins that only add commands, protection or chat features need nothing on the client.

Add things safely

1. Back up the world, mods and plugins folders.

2. Start with Cardboard plus your required Fabric mods and confirm the server boots.

3. Add plugins one at a time, restarting each time and checking the console.

4. Join the server and test the plugin's commands.

Watch for conflicts

  • Two things that change the same behavior (for example a Fabric protection mod and a protection plugin) can clash. Pick one for each job.
  • Plugins that were written for custom items or blocks from a specific server software may not recognize modded content.
  • If something breaks, remove the newest addition first and check the console log for the cause.
