Cardboard Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I install a plugin on my Cardboard server?
Put the plugin's .jar file in the server's plugins folder, then restart the server. If the folder doesn't exist yet, start the server once with Cardboard installed so it gets created. Check the console on startup to confirm the plugin was loaded.
Which plugins work with Cardboard?
Many Bukkit and Spigot plugins work, and Paper plugins work to a lesser degree, but Cardboard is still in development so compatibility isn't complete. Simple plugins that stick to the standard Bukkit API are the most likely to run. Test new plugins on a copy of your server before adding them to your main one.
Why won't my plugin load on Cardboard?
Read the server console or latest log for the error shown when the plugin tries to enable. The usual causes are a missing dependency plugin, or a plugin that relies on internal server code (often called NMS) or Paper-only features that Cardboard doesn't provide. In that case, look for a version of the plugin that sticks to the standard API, or pick an alternative.
Where are plugin config files and how do I apply changes?
After the first launch, each plugin creates its own folder inside plugins, containing its config files. Edit them with the server stopped, then start it again. A full restart is safer than a reload command, which can cause problems with plugins on this setup.
Can I use Fabric mods and Bukkit plugins on the same server?
Yes, that is the main point of Cardboard. Put Fabric mods in the mods folder and plugins in the plugins folder. Be careful when a mod and a plugin both change the same thing, such as mob spawning, world generation or commands, because they can conflict.
Do my players need to install anything to join?
Plugins run only on the server, so players don't need anything for them. They only need client-side mods if one of your Fabric mods requires it, such as mods that add new blocks or items. Mods that only change server behavior don't need to be on the client.
My server crashes or lags after adding a plugin, what do I do?
Remove the most recently added plugin and see if the problem goes away. If you added several at once, add them back one at a time to find the culprit. Then check the log for repeating errors from that plugin, since constant errors can cause lag.
Can I use permissions, economy or admin plugins like on a normal Spigot server?
Many popular utility, permission and admin plugins can run, but support depends on the plugin and isn't guaranteed. If a plugin needs a dependency such as a separate permissions or economy plugin, install that dependency too. Test the commands in-game after the first start to confirm they work.
Why does a plugin's custom item or block behave oddly when I use a Fabric mod's items?
Plugins are written for vanilla Minecraft and don't always know about items or blocks added by Fabric mods. They may ignore them or treat them as something else. If a plugin interacts badly with modded content, check its config for options that exclude certain items, or avoid combining the two.
What should I do before updating Cardboard or my plugins?
Back up your world, the plugins folder and the mods folder first. Because Cardboard is still in development, an update can change which plugins work. Update on a test copy of the server, check the console for errors, and only then update your live server.
