How to Troubleshoot Carbon Config Settings That Won't Apply

You changed a setting, saved, and nothing happened. Carbon Config is usually reliable, so the cause is almost always one of a few specific things.

Check Whether the Setting Is Server-Sided

The most common cause: the option is server-controlled. Carbon Config deliberately supports server-sided configs and multiplayer editing, which means some values are owned by the server. Your local change is ignored because the server sends its own value on connect. Look for a server/client marker on the entry or in its tooltip.

Confirm You Saved and Reloaded

Carbon Config writes changes when you confirm the screen. If you closed the screen without saving, nothing was written. Some mods also cache config values at startup and only re-read them on a reload or restart — if the option is marked as requiring a restart, do that.

Check for Conflicting Per-Player Values

If the option is a client-to-server setting, your saved value is sent when you join. If you changed it while already connected and the mod does not hot-sync, reconnect so the server receives your new value.

Verify the Right Mod's Config

With many mods installed, it is easy to edit the wrong screen. Confirm the mod name in the config header matches the feature you are trying to change before assuming the setting is broken.
